“Jazz: Gonzaguinha’s Africa/Brazil #1-10” is a series of 8 large paintings (#6 and #8 were not finished) based on a composition by the late Brazilian singer/songwriter Gonzaguinha.
Titled, “Tanacara” (“It’s in the Face”) its subject is the shared culture and lineage of Africa and Brazil. Though not technically jazz, Afro-Brazilian music has inspired many jazz musicians. This song was included in Gonzaguinha’s 1990 recording titled, “E.”
These paintings were completed in 2004, all are oil and flashe on collaged paper, each is 42” x 42.”
Paintings photographed by Joseph Szaszfai.
